Hawaii Criminal Justice System

The Honolulu Prosecutor represents the State of Hawaii in offenses against the laws of the state and the ordinances and rules and regulations of the city.  If you are involved in a case before the state,

  • The Public Defenders Office - Represents the accused who cannot afford their own attorney
  • The Prosecuting Attorney, Victim/Witness Kokua Services - Advocates for victims and witnesses of crimes against the person
  • The Hawaii State Judiciary - Manages juries for jury trials and presides over all matters to ensure equal protection under the law

Below are some useful flowcharts and legal terminologies that you can use to get a better understanding of the Hawaii Criminal Justice System.  Note, however, that these criminal justice flow charts were produced to give the general public a better understanding of the criminal justice system.  They are basic models and portray the most common sequence of events in response to serious criminal behavior.  They are not representative of any individual case:
