Duties and Function 

The department provides information technology services to the mayor and City agencies to enable them to serve the public in a cost-effective and efficient manner. It also provides computer services to other governmental and non-governmental agencies doing business with the City.

The department manages the City's computer network and a central data processing operations center twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Ongoing projects include mainframe system and software upgrade, telecommunications and wide-area networking, client/server application development, and electronic forms processing.

There are four divisions in the department:

Administration/Applications
Grace Cheng, 768-7620

Supports the information technology requirements of the department by providing strategic planning, capital budget planning, and project management.

Analyzes the business functions performed by City divisions and makes recommendations for service improvements through the development and implementation of software applications. Support is provided for Finance, Land Management, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Public Safety, and Management Services applications. Computer Service Representatives are assigned to each City agency to provide direct technical support.

Operations
Herb Ho, 768-7614

Manages the operation of the mainframe computer system and assists City personnel in their use of mainframe services. The division provides central Help Desk (523-4479) support for all City mainframe users as well as processing for all mainframe applications. Technicians work with the central Help Desk (768-8888) to provide direct technical support to City desktop users.

Technical Support
Alvin Sunahara, 768-7630

Provides technical assistance in the evaluation, planning, and use of information technology to all City divisions. This mission is accomplished through the implementation and maintenance of the desktop computer operating systems and networks, City-wide microcomputer training and user assistance, and maintenance of City web servers to assist City agencies in providing City information via the Internet.
