2010 JUNIOR LIFEGUARD PROGRAM

The 2010 Junior Lifeguard Program will consist of (1) site at Ala Moana Beach Park.
Sign-ups for the 2010 program will take place on Saturday - May 22, 2010
fronting the Ocean Safety Training Center in Ala Moana Beach Park from 9:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. 
The OSD Training Center is located at the ewa end of the park directly behind lifeguard tower 1B.

The (8) sessions available at Ala Moana Beach Park as follows:

    SESSION #2: JUNE 14 - JUNE 18
    SESSION #3: JUNE 21 - JUNE 25
  SESSION #4: JUNE 28 - JULY 2
SESSION #5: JULY 5 - JULY 9
    SESSION #6: JULY 12 - JULY 16
    SESSION #7: JULY 19 - JULY 23
    SESSION #8: JULY 26 - JULY 30


Program Purpose: The Junior Lifeguard Program has as its primary purpose:
To increase the self-confidence, physical conditioning, and ocean awareness of program participants through their introduction to water safety, first aid and surf rescue techniques.

The course is instructed by veteran beach lifeguards. Guest lecturers include ocean aquatic experts and often world class champions in sports such as surfing, body boarding, body surfing, et al. All course instructors are required to possess, at a minimum, current certifications in the State of Hawaii's "First Responder" emergency medical services course; Basic Cardiac Life Support; Standard First Aid; and United States Lifesaving Association Open Water Lifesaving Instructors' Certification Course.

Classes: The 2010 Junior Guard Program will consist of (1) site at Ala Moana Beach Park and will provide (8) one-week sessions with a capacity of 32 children per session.
The dates for the sessions are as follows:

SESSION #1: JUNE 7- JUNE 11
SESSION #2: JUNE 14 - JUNE 18
SESSION #3: JUNE 21 - JUNE 25
SESSION #4: JUNE 28 - JULY 2
SESSION #5: JULY 5 - JULY 9
SESSION #6: JULY 12 - JULY 16
SESSION #7: JULY 19 - JULY 23
SESSION #8: JULY 26 - JULY 30

Admission Requirements:

1. Participants must be between 13 and 17 years of age. Must be 13 years of age before June 1st,   
    2010. 
   
2. Applicants must possess a basic swimming ability with the capability of swimming at least 500
    yards. This is not a learn to swim program.

3. All documentation must be recieved before the applicant may participate in the program.

Instruction and Syllabus:
Instructional methodologies employed include didactic classroom instruction and lectures, and skills training and enhancement. A typical course day consists of instruction in the following:

  • Physical training is be provided including warm up, stretching, running on the beach and swimming;
  • Ocean Skills Training - Daily instruction alternates between paddling rescue boards, using surf boards, body boards and rescue apparatis, rescue tube, RESCUE personal watercraft , performing water entries and exits, skin diving, surf swimming, body surfing and skills topics including surf awareness and safety                                                      

Classroom Skills Training - Personal care topics are taught such as skin cancer awareness, eye safety and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through an appropriate diet, physical conditioning, etc. Lifesaving techniques and procedures are introduced through victim detection and first aid instruction. Beach condition assessment, ocean current and surf condition detection, safety awareness and marine life identification are also included in this compenent.
