A BRIEF HISTORY OF EMS

HPD ambulance attendants -Wm. Meyers and Wm. McCullen, c. 1916

1910 The Queen's Hospital begins privateambulance service

1916 The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) begins the city's first ambulance service



1917 HPD hires full time ambulance attendants and gives the ambulance service to the Health Department

Cadillac ambulance used by Hawaii Ambulance Service c. 1960

1931 Twenty-four hour-a-day service begins

In the 1960s, Basic life support and CPR classes begin for ambulance attendants



1971 First Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) classes begin

1973 MEDICOM radio network for ambulance to hospital communication established

1974 Agreement with Army 68th Medical Detachment integrates from scene helicopter transport with C&C and Army personnel attending to the patient

1975 Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT) program established; county 911 system finished


1976 Co-response agreement with Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and United States Coast Guard


CCEMS MICTs, CC Water Safety and HFD work together to resucitate a drowning vicitm

1977 Advanced Cardiac and Trauma Life Support classes begun, Federal EMS standards achieved
