Kalakaua Avenue: "One of the world's greatest avenues"

Kalakaua Avenue will be the gathering place, where
Waikiki's main attractions occur

The vision for Kalakaua Avenue continues to be accomplished through the
partnering of the City and the private sector to improve the public sidewalk space
for pedestrians.  The continuing transformation of Kalakaua Avenue into a
world-class pedestrian environment will seamlessly join publicly accessible
gathering spaces adjacent to wide sidewalks with complementing landscaping,
decor and pedestrian attractions such as open-air dining and shopping
    opportunities.

Visually, pedestrian enhancements within the public sidewalk area will add
extensive new landscaping for shading and more historic light fixtures with attached
planters and banner mounts.  Sidewalk improvements will also extend the quartzite
tiling fronting the Kuhio Beach Center along both sides of Kalakaua Avenue and
there will be more benches and seating areas.  Decoratively painted crosswalks
will direct pedestrians to safe crossings and alert motorists.  Signage for motorists
and pedestrians will be less cluttered and easier to understand.

Building upon the success of Brunch on the Beach, a convertible event plaza
fronting the Kuhio Beach Center will facilitate set up for similar types of events.
The plaza will have special pavement treatment; street trees in planters that can be
repositioned into the street; special curbing to facilitate pedestrian access; utility
connections for food preparation, entertainment and lighting; and, a routine traffic
detour plan for when the plaza is activated.
