The Department of Community Services, in existence since 1970, is comprised of 6 divisions: Administrative Services, Community Assistance, Community-Based Development, Elderly Affairs, Office of Special Projects and WorkHawaii. Our moto, "Becoming Community to Better Serve the Community", shows our interest in working as a cohesive unit to serve the physical and social needs of the people of O'ahu so they may receive available services in an efficient, seamless and timely manner.

The department administers more than $50 million dollars in federal, state, local and private grants including child care programs; employment counseling and training; facilitation of low-income housing development including programs for the homeless; fair housing programs; programs for economically disadvantaged youth; rehabilitation loans; rental assistance; information, assistance and other services to the elderly; coordination of a volunteer service corps; and staffing of advisory boards on childcare, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and women.

The cumulative knowledge and experience of our staff allows us to provide a comprehensive range of social services to needy individuals and families in our community to help them become self-sufficient. It also allows staff to collaborate with other public and private agencies to maximize available resources in the provision of needed facilities and services.
